## The x402 Protocol

x402 repurposes the long-reserved HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code to create
a universal, web-native payment primitive.

**How it works:**
1. Client (human or AI agent) sends an HTTP request.
2. Server responds with HTTP 402 and machine-readable payment terms
   (amount, currency, network, recipient address).
3. Client settles the payment onchain automatically.
4. Client retries the request with a signed payment proof header.
5. Server verifies and returns 200 OK with the requested resource.

No forms, no redirects, no subscriptions — payment completes in under one second.

**Key properties:**
- Permissionless: no signup or API key required to pay
- Multi-rail: supports USDC on Base, Ethereum, Solana, and other networks
- AI-native: autonomous agents can pay without human intervention
